Country Restaurant Awards

Spain Restaurant Awards

Honouring the kitchens, chefs, cafés and hospitality houses that make Spain one of the most celebrated dining destinations on earth — from the tabernas of Seville to the avant-garde tasting counters of Barcelona.

A Nation Built on the Table

Where Eating Is a Way of Life

Few countries treat dining with the devotion that Spain does. The long lunch, the late dinner, the unhurried ritual of sobremesa — lingering at the table long after the plates are cleared — are woven into the rhythm of daily life. In Madrid, a single neighbourhood might hold a century-old casa de comidas, a glittering rooftop restaurant and a market hall where chefs reinterpret regional classics, all within a few streets of one another.

The geography is just as generous as the appetite. Barcelona fuses Catalan tradition with restless creativity; Valencia guards the birthright of paella and the rice fields of the Albufera; Seville turns the tapas crawl into an art form; and Malaga, on the Costa del Sol, pairs grilled espetos by the sea with a fast-growing scene of polished coastal kitchens. The Spain Restaurant Awards exist to celebrate this extraordinary range — every establishment that pours skill, hospitality and pride into the act of feeding people well.

The Landscape

Restaurant Industry Overview

Spanish dining culture rests on a foundation of conviviality. Meals are social events, designed to be shared — a table of small plates passed between friends, a slow procession of seafood and cured ham, a bottle of Rioja or cava opened without ceremony. This communal instinct shapes everything from the neighbourhood bar to the destination tasting menu, and it gives Spanish hospitality a warmth that visitors remember long after they leave.

The country's signature cuisines are regional treasures. Catalonia offers seafood suquets and the technical brilliance that made Spain a global culinary force; the Basque Country contributes pintxos and a fierce coastal larder; Valencia defends authentic paella and arroces; Andalusia gives the world chilled gazpacho, fried fish and the tapas tradition that Seville and Malaga have perfected. Iberian ham, Manchego cheese, olive oil, sherry and saffron remain pillars of the Spanish pantry, while regional rice, pulses and vegetables anchor a cuisine that is at once rustic and refined.

Both ends of the market are flourishing. At the top, Spain has long punched above its weight in fine dining, with ambitious chefs in Madrid, Barcelona and beyond pushing technique, creativity and seasonality to new heights. At the everyday end, casual dining is booming — modern tapas bars, market-hall counters, vermouth bars and contemporary bistros are giving diners more reason than ever to eat out. The Spain Restaurant Awards recognise excellence across this full spectrum, because greatness lives in a perfectly grilled espeto just as surely as in a twenty-course tasting menu.

Tourism & Hospitality

Hospitality Market & Culinary Tourism

For millions of visitors, food is the reason to come to Spain rather than a footnote to the trip. Travellers plan itineraries around a tapas route through Seville, a paella lunch in Valencia, a market breakfast in Barcelona or a coastal seafood feast in Malaga. Restaurants, in other words, are not simply part of the tourism economy — they are one of its primary engines, drawing guests to cities, regions and seasons they might otherwise overlook.

This appetite ripples through the wider hospitality sector. Hotels build their identities around their restaurants and rooftop bars; coastal resorts compete on the quality of their kitchens; and entire neighbourhoods regenerate around a single celebrated chef. Recognition through the Spain Restaurant Awards helps establishments stand out in a crowded, internationally minded market — signalling to discerning local diners and visiting guests alike that a kitchen is worth the journey, and reinforcing Spain's standing as one of the great culinary destinations of the world.
