Mediterranean Restaurant Awards

Honouring the kitchens that carry the sunlit table of the Mediterranean — olive oil, sea salt, charred vegetables and the slow generosity of the shared plate — to guests around the world.

A Cuisine of Sun and Sea

Where the Table Is the Heart of the House

Few culinary traditions are as instantly understood, or as endlessly varied, as that of the Mediterranean. From the tavernas of the Aegean to the trattorias of the Italian coast, from Levantine mezze houses to the seafood grills of the Costa Brava, this is a way of cooking built on sunshine, the sea and the conviction that a meal is a thing to be shared slowly. Good olive oil, ripe tomatoes, charred aubergine, lemon, herbs cut that morning — the ingredients are humble, but the standard of the cooking that elevates them is anything but.

The Mediterranean Restaurant Awards recognise the operators who hold that standard with care. We celebrate restaurants that treat simplicity as a discipline rather than a shortcut: the kitchen that sources a single producer's olive oil and refuses to compromise, the host who reads a table and paces a long lunch perfectly, the chef who can make a plate of grilled fish feel like an event. In a category often diluted by generic "Med-inspired" menus, this recognition restores meaning to the word.

Recognition matters because the best Mediterranean restaurants are quietly excellent in ways that rarely make headlines. An award gives that excellence a name, a platform and a measurable signal of trust — for guests choosing where to spend an anniversary dinner, for travellers seeking the authentic table, and for the teams whose daily work deserves to be seen. What We Recognise

Six Honours for Mediterranean Restaurants

Each award within the Mediterranean Restaurant programme is judged on its own merits, so a small family taverna and a coastal fine-dining destination can both find the recognition that fits their craft.

Mediterranean Restaurant of the Year

Our flagship honour, awarded to the restaurant that most completely embodies the spirit of the Mediterranean table — in sourcing, cooking, hospitality and atmosphere — across a full year of consistent service.

Best New Mediterranean Restaurant

For openings within their first two years that have already established a clear point of view, a confident kitchen and a guest experience that feels assured well beyond their age.

Mediterranean Culinary Excellence

Recognising technical mastery and ingredient devotion — the kitchens whose grilling, baking and seasoning reveal a profound command of this deceptively simple cuisine.

Rising Star of the Mediterranean

Celebrating a chef or restaurateur whose early work signals exceptional promise, originality and the discipline to honour tradition while taking it somewhere new.

Best Mediterranean Menu

For the menu that tells the strongest story — balanced, seasonal, regionally coherent and generous — from mezze and antipasti through to the sweet close of a long meal.

Best Guest Experience

Honouring the warmth, pacing and intuitive care that define true Mediterranean hospitality, where every guest is treated as family and no detail of the welcome is left to chance.

Judging Criteria

How Mediterranean Restaurants Are Assessed

Our panel evaluates each nominee against six pillars, weighing the whole experience rather than any single dish or detail.

  • Cuisine & Ingredients — the quality, sourcing and seasonality of produce, and the skill with which the kitchen honours Mediterranean flavours and technique.
  • Service & Hospitality — the warmth, knowledge and attentiveness of the team, and how naturally guests are made to feel welcome.
  • Ambience & Atmosphere — the design, mood and sense of place that make the dining room feel authentically Mediterranean.
  • Consistency — the reliability of the experience across visits, services and seasons, regardless of how busy the room is.
  • Innovation — thoughtful creativity that refreshes the tradition without losing its essential character or soul.
  • Guest Experience — the complete journey from booking to farewell, including value, pacing and the lasting impression left behind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mediterranean Restaurant Awards FAQ

We define Mediterranean broadly to include kitchens rooted in the cooking of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea — Greek, Italian coastal, Spanish, Levantine, Turkish, Cypriot, North African and modern Mediterranean styles. If your menu and ethos draw genuinely on this larder and its hospitality, you are eligible to enter.

Yes. Our judging weighs each restaurant on its own terms — the quality of cooking, hospitality and consistency relative to what it sets out to be. A humble taverna delivering a flawless experience can score as highly as an ambitious destination restaurant.

Each nominee is assessed against six pillars: cuisine and ingredients, service and hospitality, ambience, consistency, innovation and overall guest experience. Our independent panel reviews submissions and supporting evidence before reaching its decisions. The full method is set out on our judging process page.

Owners, chefs and management teams may nominate their own restaurant, and guests or industry colleagues may nominate a restaurant they admire. Every nomination is reviewed by our team to confirm eligibility before it proceeds to judging.

Winners receive an official accolade to display, featured coverage across our channels and press outreach, and a trusted, independent mark of quality that supports bookings, recruitment and reputation. It is recognition you can carry proudly across your dining room and marketing.
