French Restaurant Awards

Honouring the maisons, bistros and brasseries that uphold the enduring art of French gastronomy with precision, generosity and grace.

The World of French Dining

Where Technique Becomes Hospitality

Few culinary traditions have shaped the way the world eats quite like the French. From the mother sauces and the rigour of the brigade kitchen to the unhurried ritual of a long lunch, French gastronomy gave fine dining its grammar. The French Restaurant Awards, part of our World Cuisines collection at the International Restaurant Awards, exist to celebrate the establishments that carry that inheritance forward — not as museum pieces, but as living rooms full of warmth, craft and quiet generosity.

French restaurants today span an extraordinary range. There is the candlelit haute cuisine table where every gesture is choreographed; the corner bistro where a perfect steak frites and a carafe of red feel like home; the brasserie humming through the afternoon; the patisserie where a single flaky croissant 🥐 can define a morning. What unites them is an exacting respect for the produce, the technique and the guest. This recognition matters because it rewards consistency under pressure, the depth of a wine cellar, and the sincerity of welcome that turns a meal into a memory.

To be named among the finest French restaurants is to be measured against one of the most demanding standards in hospitality. Our awards give chefs, sommeliers and front-of-house teams a credible, independent platform to be seen by diners, critics and industry peers around the globe — and to take their rightful place beside the world's great dining destinations.

Frequently Asked Questions

French Restaurant Awards FAQ

What qualifies a restaurant as French for these awards? +
A restaurant qualifies if its menu and culinary identity are rooted in French gastronomy — whether classical haute cuisine, bistro and brasserie cooking, modern French, or pastry-led venues. The restaurant may be located anywhere in the world; what matters is the authenticity and quality of its French culinary focus.
Do I need a Michelin star or formal rating to enter? +
No. Existing accolades are welcome but never required. Our judging is independent and considers cuisine, service, ambience, consistency, innovation and guest experience on their own merits, so an unrated neighbourhood bistro and a celebrated fine dining room are assessed against the same considered standards.
Can a French restaurant inside a hotel or resort be nominated? +
Yes. Signature French dining rooms within hotels and resorts are very welcome and are judged on the same criteria as standalone restaurants. If you also operate within a wider property, you may wish to explore our resort and hotel restaurant sector awards as well.
Who may submit a nomination? +
Owners, chefs, management teams and even loyal guests may submit a nomination. The process is straightforward: complete the online nomination form with details about the restaurant, and our team will follow up with any further information required for evaluation.
Can my restaurant enter more than one award category? +
Absolutely. A French restaurant may be considered for several honours where relevant — for example French Restaurant of the Year alongside Best French Menu & Cellar or Best French Guest Experience. You may also explore related World Cuisines sectors such as the Mediterranean restaurant awards if your offering crosses traditions.
