Honouring the restaurateurs, founders and hospitality leaders whose vision, judgement and quiet generosity shape the way the world dines.

The People Behind The Plate

Celebrating The Leaders Who Build Great Restaurants

Behind every memorable dining room stands a leader who decided what it should feel like to walk through the door. The Restaurant Leadership Awards recognise the owners, founders, managing partners and hospitality directors whose decisions ripple outward into every service, every hire and every guest who returns. A great chef can plate a beautiful dish, but it is leadership that builds the conditions in which beauty becomes routine.

This category looks beyond the kitchen pass to the people steering the whole enterprise. We celebrate those who treat hospitality as a craft of its own: the restaurateur who knows every regular by name, the operator who has weathered three economic cycles without losing the warmth of the room, the founder who turned a single neighbourhood table into a respected group. Their work is rarely visible on the plate, yet it is felt in the confidence of the floor team and the loyalty of the clientele.

Recognition matters because leadership in hospitality is so easily taken for granted. When a restaurant runs beautifully, the effort disappears into the experience. The Restaurant Leadership Awards make that effort visible, placing the strategists, mentors and culture-builders of our industry alongside the chefs they so often champion. It is a tribute to the people who carry the standard of an entire dining sector on their shoulders.

Judging Criteria

How Leaders Are Assessed

Our panel of restaurateurs, hospitality consultants and culinary experts evaluates each nomination against the qualities that distinguish genuine leadership from competent management. Submissions are reviewed holistically, with weight given to the lived experience of guests and teams.

  • Cuisine: the quality, identity and consistency of the food programme the leader has shaped and stands behind.
  • Service: the standard, warmth and professionalism of the front-of-house culture the leader has built.
  • Ambience: the coherence of atmosphere, design and mood across the whole dining experience.
  • Consistency: the ability to deliver the same high standard night after night, across every site.
  • Innovation: the originality of concept, operations and ideas the leader brings to the sector.
  • Guest Experience: the loyalty, satisfaction and emotional connection guests feel toward the restaurant.

We also consider how leaders treat their teams, reflecting our belief that great hospitality begins with how people are looked after behind the scenes. Read more on our award categories overview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Restaurant Leadership Awards FAQ

Who is eligible for the Restaurant Leadership Awards? +
Any owner, founder, managing partner, general manager, hospitality director or chef-patron with genuine responsibility for the direction and culture of a restaurant may be nominated. Both independent operators and group leaders are welcome, regardless of the size or style of their venue.
Can I nominate myself, or must someone else do it? +
Both routes are accepted. Many leaders nominate themselves and tell their own story, while others are put forward by team members, business partners or industry peers. The strength of the submission matters far more than who writes it.
How is leadership judged when results vary by venue? +
Our panel assesses leadership in context. We look at cuisine, service, ambience, consistency, innovation and guest experience relative to the scale and ambition of each operation, so a thoughtful single-site restaurateur competes fairly alongside a multi-site group leader.
Does this award differ from the chef-focused honours? +
Yes. The Restaurant Leadership Awards recognise the business, culture and people side of hospitality, whereas culinary mastery is celebrated under the Executive Chef Awards. Chef-patrons who lead both kitchen and enterprise are welcome to enter either or both.
What does it cost to be considered? +
Full details of entry and participation are set out on our fee page. We aim to keep the process transparent and accessible so that leaders from every corner of the dining world, including across the Middle East, can take part.
